This easy mixed berry smoothie is packed full of vitamin C and anti-inflammatory turmeric spice but tastes so great that you’ll be making it all year round! (Jump directly to the recipe.)
This post was sponsored by Safeway. I was compensated for this post and for developing the recipe. However all opinions below are completely my own.
I joke with my partner AJ that I have a “weak constitution” but it’s true that whenever the season turns cold, I start to get the sniffles. And so it happened a few years ago, on the flight back from the Midwest for the holidays where I was visiting AJ’s family, that I got a cough. Which turned into a cold. Which led to a sinus infection that knocked me out for way longer than it should have. So from then on, the minute I start to notice a tickle in the back of my throat, I start taking care of myself by making myself a mixed berry smoothie with turmeric and black pepper.
My mixed berry smoothie is packed with vitamin C from the Safeway O Organics® frozen mixed berries, protein from the Safeway O Organics® peanut butter and Safeway O Organics® almond milk, as well as potassium from the banana, and the anti-inflammatory spices of turmeric and black pepper. But, more important to me, the smoothie taste great. In fact, I often make this smoothie for breakfast, regardless of how I’m feeling.
Of course, sometimes when you’re coming down with a cold, there’s nothing you can do about it other than let it runs its course. Over-the-counter medication is helpful and I’m glad that I can buy Safeway’s Signature Care™ line of exclusive products like their Signature Care™ Cough Drops Honey Lemon, Nasal Decongestant Tablets and Cold/Flu Relief Daytime Softgels. They’re priced more reasonably and have the same active ingredients and manufacturing standards mandated by the FDA as national brands and are pharmacist recommended. They even come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee though I’ve never had to use it. I’m just happy I can do my one-stop shopping and get my organic ingredients and over-the-counter medication, saving time AND money. Or (to be honest) it’s really AJ who is happy about it. He’s the one I send to the store when I’m laid up in bed feeling less than top notch. Ha!
In the end, making this mixed berry smoothie is minimal effort (because who wants to spend time in the kitchen when you’re feeling under the weather?) for maximum flavor and health. I kind of swear by this smoothie and its restorative properties, almost like it’s magic. But even if you are healthy smoothie agnostic, it’s pretty awesome tasting for breakfast or just a healthy mid-afternoon snack.
Mixed Berry Smoothie with Turmeric and Black Pepper
By Irvin Lin
This multi-berry smoothie is packed full of Vitamin C as well as anti-inflammatory turmeric and black pepper. The very slight kick of the spices makes this one of my favorite smoothies regardless of whether I am feeling under the weather not. But in cold season, I’ll take any defense I can get! Be sure to add the black pepper to the smoothie as well. It sounds a bit weird in a smoothie but the addition of the black pepper helps boost the turmeric anti-inflammatory properties and also makes a tasty addition to the berries.
Ingredients
1 cup Safeway O Organics® frozen mixed berries
1 medium banana
1/2 cup Safeway O Organics® plain or vanilla almond milk
2 tablespoons Safeway O Organics® creamy peanut butter
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
Directions
1. Place all the ingredients in a blender.
2. Puree on medium speed until smooth.
Makes 1 serving, can be doubled.

Hi there,
Because I trust your taste I am going to add that black pepper called for in your recipe.
Cinnamon , fresh ginger, honey, pinch of cayenne in a pineapple smoothie cam work wonders when you feel sniffles might be coming your way. Or make a hot bew with these ingredients and fresh lemon and orange juice … Here’s to a healthy and happy autumn!
Cheers,
Anne

The black pepper is there for a very good reason: it boosts the absorption of turmeric’s active ingredient, curcumin, in the body.

This mixed berry smoothie looks really great and delicious!
This looks like the perfect recipe for my new Nutirboost Bullet blender, which is perfect to make nutrient-rich smoothies. Until now I’ve only used it to mill flour or coffee because with it’s 900W motor and the 23.000 RPM that no problem.
