I’m always thrilled to read cookbooks with a singular perspective in life. Whether it’s the beauty of a hand drawn and designed cookbook like The Forest Feast by Erin Gleeson to Molly Wizenberg’s Delancey book that tells the story of how she built a life with her husband and their acclaimed pizza shop, cookbooks can transport you just as much as a good fiction. I’m always happy to explore someone else’s life through the lens of food. I’m also giving away a copy of Erin Gleeson’s gorgeous The Forest Feast cookbook, details at the bottom of this post.[THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED]
Erin Gleeson was an accomplished food photographer living the dream in New York City when her husband sudden gets a job in California. So she traded in the urban jungle for the gorgeous woods just outside of Silicon Valley. So, like any adventurous multi-talented person, she decides to create a gorgeous blog and a beautiful accompanying cookbook The Forest Feast to go along with it. From her blog came her cookbook The Forest Feast. Filled with stunning photographs, simple and basic vegetarian recipes (most recipes range from 3 to 8 easy to find and source ingredients), and adorable hand watercolored type and illustrations. This is the sort of cookbook that you want to sit down and explore and hope that one of these days you’ll get invited to one of Erin’s parties. But if not, at least you have the cookbook.
I have a number of vegetarian friends and it’s never difficult to feed them. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not always looking for new vegetarian dishes that will satisfy me and my partner (who is a devout carnivore). Enter Vegetarian for a New Generation by Liana Krissoff. Taking inspiration from global cuisine, Liana crates recipes that stand on their own, full of bright flavors and colors without resorting to the age old “you’ll never miss the meat” phrase that I personally hate. These are recipes that stand on their own with complex flavors and celebrate the flavors that you get from fresh produce with recipes like Roasted Broccoli with Pomegranate and Tahini, Grilled Sweet Corn with Feta Salad, and Brussels Sprouts with Tamarind-Ginger Dressing. Broken down into seasons, these vegetable dishes recipes are perfect as a main course for your vegetarian and vegan friends as well as a side dish if you really must eat meat during the meal (like my partner often does).
I’ve adored Molly Wizenberg’s blog Orangette ever since I started reading blogs years ago. Her previous book A Homemade Life was one of my favorite food memoirs and so I have been looking forward to Delancey, a memoir of her relationship with her husband and how they started their acclaimed pizza shop. Opening a restaurant is a tough job (something I NEVER want to do, so friends please stop asking me) and the stress of it took a toll on their marriage as well. Filled with wit and humor throughout as well as her warm personality and sprinkles of various recipes this is the sort of book that I want to curl up to in an oversized lounge chair and read at night.
It’s not surprise that A Simple Feast by Diana Yen & the Jewels of New York is a gorgeous book. The Jewels of New York is a creative studio in NY focusing on food styling, photography, menu consulting and special event catering. So when they released their first cookbook, you know that the recipes would be elegant and sophisticated without being precious. From recipes like pecan pie with salted maple ice cream; mini pea, mint and feta quiche; and heirloom bean soup with crispy kale, the recipes based on seasonal ingredients are bright and fresh and bursting from the pages. This is the sort of cookbook that will live in my kitchen and not just my bookshelf.
The Fabulous Beekman Boys of Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell have developed a multimedia lifestyle company have been called the next Martha Stewart. With their third cookbook The Beekman 1802 Heirloom Vegetable Cookbook, these boys are one step closer to world domination. Of course if world domination is filled with grilled steak and lima bean salad; golden squash, pepper and tomato gratin; and summer squash lasagna rolls I’m totally in favor of letting them take over. Filled with solid easy-to-follow recipes that incorporate beautiful vegetables, this cookbook broken into seasons, is a great source of ideas and recipes for using your CSA box or farmer’s market produce.
