“I think he’s off in the Badlands, running around…” said a friend of mine back when I was in college and inquired where a mutual friend of ours was spending the summer. It was the first time I had heard of the Badlands and was instantly intrigued at a place with such a strange name. It wasn’t until about twenty years later that I finally found myself wandering about the Badlands National Park with AJ, on our road trip across the USA and I got to experience it for myself. Strange, desolate and oddly beautiful, the Badlands National Park seemed to go on forever. I can see why our friend wanted to spend a summer there.

Lovely photos! Hey Irvin…question. I was just curious if you design/decorate cakes too. You’re such an awesome baker and artist, I can imagine you doing wonders with decorating cakes. I was browsing your older posts and wasn’t able to find anything of such. Just wondering.

You know, I rarely do decorated cakes as I try to concentrate more on the flavor of the cake than on how it tastes. Too often the over decorated cakes are pretty but don’t taste that great. I’m not a fan of fondant or gum paste. That said, the only recipe I have on my blog that I sort of went in that direction is a Carrot Brownie Cake where I made carrots out of marzipan. It was fun to make and tasted great but it’s really a labor of love.

Wow! I really feel as though I’m back there again–in summer. Everything is nearly black and white these days. For a look at what it’s like now–January 6 posting
