Photo Essay: Feast Portland 2014 Day 2, Part 2 – the USA Pear Night Market

“Which one is your favorite bite?” is pretty much the standard question that everyone asks you when there’s a lull in the conversation at Feast Portland. I was at the USA Pear Night Market, an Asian inspired street food event, trying to sample as many bites as possible but honestly it was the hardest question to answer. Was it the Spicy Shrimp cake from Joule Restaurant that I loved the most? Or did Bollywood Theater’s Indian curried Scotch egg tickle my fancy most? Let’s not forget the Crab Fried Rice from Pok Pok which had people lining up in droves. Of course my friends absolutely swore by the Masa Cake with Beef Tongue by Smallwares. Departure was serving up solid Vietnamese Grilled Pork that had me snagging up seconds (something I NEVER do at events like this). And, of course, there was Nong’s Khao Man Gai which never disappoints. My final answer to the question was all of the above and more so. Don’t make me choose, because I loved them all.

Oh the decisions to be made and a tummy that can’t possibly hold all that it wants!! The food looks so good. I love the little sample sizes although if you eat enough samples you end up having a food orgy!! It is so good seeing people truly enjoy themselves with wonderful tastes.

What a treat to wander with you. Although those events sometimes feel overwhelming there are always those bright spots where astonishing food is discovered and you never forget it. I was happy to see the smiling face of — is it Hong? — the tiny Vietnamese food truck artist (she’s in a bright red shirt). I watched her on CHOPPED and was so impressed with her energy and imagination. Thanks for taking us along to Portland!

t may not have deep narrative or snow rider 3d complex mechanics, but it doesn’t need to: its joy comes from the ride itself, from mastering reflexes, timing, and enjoying the winter scenery

"Mr. Lin, a graphic designer in San Francisco who writes the food blog Eat the Love, takes risks in nearly every one of the 150 elaborate recipes in his book. He doesn’t just paint the lily; he bejewels and shellacs it, too."
–MELISSA CLARK for the New York Times

“My goodness, this cookbook! It’s filled to the brim with recipes for the most splendidly beautiful cakes, cookies, breads, and tarts I think I’ve ever seen. My eyes kept getting wider and wider as I turned every page—both the flavor combinations and the photos are out of this world. Irvin Lin has most definitely outdone himself. This book is a triumph!”
—REE DRUMMOND, New York Times best-selling author of The Pioneer Woman Cooks

“Irvin Lin gives home-baked treats a twist, ramping them up with a range of contemporary flavors that are sure to surprise and delight. From beer-battered brownies to smoky butterscotch taking a classic cake to the next level, I can’t wait to mix, stir, and bake my way through Marbled, Swirled, and Layered!”
