The Black and Orange Russian Cocktail [Sponsored Post]

The classic Black Russian gets an update with a touch of citrus orange in the Black and Orange Russian Cocktail! (Jump directly to the recipe.)

Christmas is almost here, with the New Year just around the corner and I know I’m suppose to be freaking out. I’ve not done my Christmas shopping at all. I’m still cleaning up from our annual massive holiday Christmas party. And I’m heading back to the Midwest to visit my in-laws in a couple of days, which means I need to finish all my work before we leave. Thinking about all that needs to get done, I decided I needed to relax a bit and made myself a Black and Orange Russian with Kahlúa and ABSOLUT Mandarin.

Thankfully my partner and I finally got our Christmas tree up. We were late this year as Christmas kind of snuck up on us. One minute you’re roasting a turkey for Thanksgiving and the next minute it’s late December! But the minute we got the tree home and in our tree stand, it hit me all at once. Christmas is around the corner! I haven’t baked enough cookies! I haven’t drunk enough eggnog! I need to start listening to more Christmas music right now!

Honestly even though it sounds like I’m stressed out, I’m not really. Unlike some, I absolutely love Christmas season. Since I work from home I don’t have to deal the mad panic of people shopping during lunchtime. Something I dealt with when I worked in the shopping district here in San Francisco years ago. Instead I can relax at home, doing my work, shopping online (yay express shipping!), and just staring at my Christmas tree, with the Christmas music of my choice (right now it’s Tracey Thorn’s Tinsel and Light), all the while sipping on my Black and Orange Russian. Let the holidays and the New Year come. I’ll be bringing in 2015 with this cocktail!

This post was sponsored by Kahlúa. For the months of October, November and December I’m teaming up with Kahlua to bring you recipes and cocktails using their various Kahlua liqueur flavors. I was compensated for the post and for developing the recipe. However all opinions above (and below) are completely my own and not endorsed by Kahlúa. Black and Orange Russian

By Irvin Lin

The classic Black Russian is made with 1 part Kahlúa and 1 part vodka over ice, but I gave it a bit of a twist by using ABSOLUT Mandarin, a mandarin and citrus infused vodka. Add a bit of orange peel garnish and you have an updated classic drink suitable for…well pretty much anytime if you ask me!

Ingredients
1 oz Kahlúa
1 oz ABSOLUT Mandarin vodka
Ice
Orange peel

Directions
1. Fill a double old-fashioned glass with ice cubes. Pour the Kahlúa and the ABSOLUT Mandarin vodka in. Stir, then garnish with the orange peel.

Makes 1 drink.

I certainly know how you feel about Christmas sneaking up on us. I’m making the Baccala I mentioned and the polenta is in the fridge ready to be cut and grilled. All I can say is — I’m not ready!!!!! You drinks always look so yummy. It’s in the a m but the Russian looks pretty potent. By the way, when you experimenting with drinks and you’re trying to fine tune the recipe — who drinks the mistakes?
Buon Natale e Felice Anno Nuovo to you and AJ.

"Mr. Lin, a graphic designer in San Francisco who writes the food blog Eat the Love, takes risks in nearly every one of the 150 elaborate recipes in his book. He doesn’t just paint the lily; he bejewels and shellacs it, too."
–MELISSA CLARK for the New York Times

“My goodness, this cookbook! It’s filled to the brim with recipes for the most splendidly beautiful cakes, cookies, breads, and tarts I think I’ve ever seen. My eyes kept getting wider and wider as I turned every page—both the flavor combinations and the photos are out of this world. Irvin Lin has most definitely outdone himself. This book is a triumph!”
