At first glance it looks like a big box store, like Costco or Sam’s Club, filled with industrial size boxes and crates of food and produce. But the warehouse for the San Francisco and Marin Food Bank isn’t anything like those giants. The Food Bank exists to help fill the need of those in our community that can’t afford food for themselves or their family with over 500 different producers (farmers, packagers and companies) donating the food sitting in the warehouse. With over 45 million pounds of food distributed in the past year alone, nearly 60% of which is fresh produce, the San Francisco and Marin Food Bank serves over 225,000 people each year. I had a chance to visit their warehouse here in San Francisco, where they process the food that comes in and help break it down into smaller family-sized portions for their 230 farmers market style pantries throughout SF and Marin. Right now you can help the Food Bank continue their awesome work by donating to them during this holiday season. Any money donated now through November 22, will be matched, dollar-for-dollar (up to $30,000) by FedEx. Talk about something to be grateful for! Visit the Food Bank donation page to help them meet their FedEx challenge.
