Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies with Pumpkin Spice Streusel! Recipe by Irvin Lin of Eat the Love.

We are in the middle of October 2017 and I am still in disbelief. 2017 has been a whirlwind of surreal moments, which came right after 2016, a year of equally surreal experiences. And though I see photos of friends in other parts of the country walking down sidewalks lined with trees and their changing leaves, putting on their adorable sweaters and scarves, and drinking their pumpkin spice lattes, San Francisco is in its own little surreal bubble

Mexican Chocolate Corn Coffee Cake by Irvin Lin of Eat the Love.

“We have to go to a National Park!” said AJ back in January. I was just finishing up my cookbook tour, doing events around the San Francisco Bay Area as well as traveling back to the Midwest to do events in Chicago and St. Louis. We had visited AJ’s family in Indiana and because we had traveled earlier than we usual do for my signings, we had more time than normal in early January before AJ’s school started back in session. AJ and I have a running joke that National Parks are “our thing” as if no one else in the world goes to National Parks. We hope to hit all 59 National Parks in the United States in our lifetime and so far we’re at 26. So I wasn’t the least bit suspicious about his enthusiasm

I joke with my partner AJ that I have a “weak constitution” but it’s true that whenever the season turns cold, I start to get the sniffles. And so it happened a few years ago, on the flight back from the Midwest for the holidays where I was visiting AJ’s family, that I got a cough. Which turned into a cold. Which led to a sinus infection that knocked me out for way longer than it should have. So from then on, the minute I start to notice a tickle in the back of my throat, I start taking care of myself by making myself a mixed berry smoothie with turmeric and black pepper.

Grape and Blueberry Pie by Irvin Lin of Eat the Love.

“Well you know, a lot of those slaves had better lives before they were free.” said my first boyfriend’s stepmother as she passed me a bowl of mixed vegetables. I was 19 years old and stunned at what I had heard. It was the first time I had met my then boyfriend’s family and I was on my best behavior. Or at least trying to be. My boyfriend noticed my uncomfortableness and immediately changed the subject before I could explode or storm out of the room. But the damage was done. I avoided visiting his family after that, and after a serious of dramas that can only be associated with someone in their young 20s, post-college, with your very first significant other, we broke up.

Crispy Oven Roasted Potatoes by Irvin Lin of Eat the Love.

It was walking home from my ceramics class last week that I found out my childhood friend Chris has passed away. I was staring at my phone, scrolling through Facebook when his brother Tim wrote about his passing on. I stood there in the BART train, the world passing by in a blur out the windows as I tried to absorb the information of a world without him. Chris and I weren’t close but he was an integral part of my childhood, something that now seems even farther away than it did 5 minutes before I turned on my phone

“In Trinidad they use Angostura bitters like salt and pepper!” said a friend of mine as we stood in the hot Napa heat waiting in line for some roasted meat. I was up in St. Helena, in the heart of Napa Valley, at the Cochon 555 Heritage Fire event. The House of Angostura was a sponsor of the event and had brought my partner AJ and me up to experience all the heirloom roasted meats and vegetables dishes that the amazing California wine country chefs were creating. We drank wine and sipped Angostura mixed with sparkling water as we tried to stay cool from the heat. I love Angostura bitters in my cocktails, it never occurred to me to use it in my cooking until that moment. I made a mental note to try it out when I got home

There are a few “secret ingredient” weapons in my pantry. Most chefs will talk about how fish sauce adds a subtle umami punch to everything (like my not-bolognese sauce). Pastry chefs will occasionally add milk powder to bake goods giving it an extra boost of goodness (like my cookies and cream cookies). But both of those specialty ingredients are exactly that. Specialty. My go-to secret ingredient weapon is something much more basic and standard. Olives! Like Lindsay’s Kalamata olives which take a basic beer bread and turn it into something amazing ridiculously good

If you have followed AJ and me on social media for the past few weeks, you’ll know that we went on a road trip and camped a lot. Though I try to take this sort of time to get offline and “off-the-grid” it’s hard for me to completely separate myself from social media. Photos of the gorgeous nature that I experience are hard not to share with everyone. And, of course, when we’re out and about, away from home camping, we’re grilling food, like these double cheese cheeseburgers made with Safeway’s O Organics® Ground Beef! Now, if it were up to me, my preferred choice of making food would be grilling. There’s something summertime magical about cooking over an open flame outside. So, when Safeway reached out to me about making something with their O Organics® Ground Beef, I knew immediately what I wanted to make

Summer is in full swing and that means some of my favorite fruit has arrived at the grocery store! And one of my all-time favorite fruit is peaches! I have been buying peaches by the bushel full and desperately eating them as fast as I can as they ripen. But, as with all fruit, there comes a point when I have to use them or lose them! And so, I gathered some leaves off my basil plant, grabbed a bottle of Filippo Berio extra virgin olive oil and made myself a peach, basil and olive oil coffee cake

“So why did you use rosemary in the cinnamon rolls?” asked my friend Rita as I shared with her what I was working on, a blog post about my pistachio rosemary cinnamon rolls with brown sugar cream cheese glaze. It’s the sort of ridiculously over-the-top baked good that I have lately been drawn to making. I had made the recipe back in April but hadn’t gotten around to blogging about it. Rita was curious as to both why I hadn’t posted about it and also HOW I came up with recipe

Meals on Wheels: Star Chef and Vintners Gala 2017 (part 2). Photo by Irvin Lin and Alec Bates of Eat the Love

Though we could completely fill up by eating our weight in appetizers from the Meals on Wheels Star Chefs and Vintners Gala, we know from past experience to save room for more. The evening is far from over with the seated three-course meal and then the deserts afterwards. During the dinner, AJ and I always sneak off to the back to do some behind-the-scenes photography and to marvel at all the chefs seamlessly moving about, in an orchestrated ballet of plating. While everyone else is bidding on the silent auction for incredible items (home prepared meals by some of the best chefs in the world to a collection of wine that is nearly impossible to purchase) AJ and I watching the chefs grill and plate the food, hoping each dish is the one we’re going to eat. And after all that comes the desserts. In the end, we find ourselves stuffed beyond belief and so happy to have supported an important cause like Meals on Wheels.

See part 1 of this photo essay.

Special thanks to Meals on Wheels for providing tickets to the Star Chefs and Vintners’ gala. I was not monetarily compensated for this post and all opinions are my own.
