Daring Baker’s Challenge

Tribute to The Queen of All Daring Bakers, Lis

November 15, 2013

It’s been years since I did a Daring Baker’s challenge, but for a brief, short time, I was active with the group. I had all but forgotten about my stint with the Bakers until I saw a post on Facebook about one of the co-founders, Lisa Cifelli of The Daring Bakers, passing away suddenly and […]

Star Anise infused Maple Mousse in a Blueberry and Lemon Tuile Cup topped with White Chocolate Whipped Cream: A Daring Bakers’ Challenge

April 27, 2011

Ahh… The Daring Bakers’ Challenge. Once a month a bunch of bakers set out to make a dessert, theoretically all the same, but vastly wildly different in real life. This challenge was pretty unique, as it was fairly open ended in terms of what we could do with it AND there was a prize involved! How […]

Honey Lemon Olive Oil Whole-Wheat Red Wine Italian Meringue Coffee Cake with Dark Chocolate and Toasted Hazelnuts: A Daring Baker’s Challenge

March 27, 2011

“So what is that?” AJ asked as he stumbled out of the bedroom still sleepy from his mid-afternoon nap. He looked suspiciously at my unbaked creation. “It’s a coffee cake. Specifically it’s a yeasted honey lemon olive oil whole wheat red wine meringue coffee cake with dark chocolate and toasted hazelnuts for the Daring Bakers’ […]

Daring Bakers’ Challenge: Vanilla Bean & Blood Orange Panna Cotta with Orange Allspice Caramel Sauce and Orange Cardamom Hazelnut Dark Chocolate Florentines (gluten free)

February 27, 2011

It’s always a dash to the finish line for me when it comes to the Daring Baker’s Challenge. And though I always ALWAYS vow to myself that I’ll make it WAY ahead of time… I never do. This month was no different, except for the fact that I checked into the challenge to see what […]

Sweet Cherry Mousse with Ribbon Sponge and Chocolate Ganache, a Daring Baker’s Challenge

January 27, 2011

It’s been a couple of months since I’ve last done a Daring Bakers’ Challenge. For those not in the know, the Daring Bakers’ Challenge is a group of bakers around the world that is challenged to make the same dessert or baked good and post it on the 27th of the month simultaneously. I missed […]

Daring Bakers Challenge: Salted Apple Caramel Bourbon Glazed Donuts.

October 29, 2010

So I have to be completely honest. This post was going to be about something else entirely. I had every intention of doing a post to tie in with my guest post for Eating Rules – October: Unprocessed project. It was going to be a baked good that was completely unprocessed, with whole grains, vegan even. I had written it all out, and all I needed to do was tweak the recipe, when I realized it was the day before the Daring Baker’s Challenge was due. So I bounced over there with EVERY intention of posting in the forums stating “I won’t be able to make the challenge this month…” and then I SAW the challenge. DONUTS. I’ve always wanted to make donuts. Damn it. So I caved and made the exact opposite of a healthy whole grained baked good. I made a salted apple caramel bourbon glazed donut. Yep. I caved real bad. But what the hey, these suckers are worth it. The October 2010 Daring Bakers challenge was hosted by Lori of Butter Me Up. Lori chose to challenge DBers to make doughnuts. She used several sources for her recipes including Alton Brown, Nancy Silverton, Kate Neumann and Epicurious.

A Day of Sweets – Berry Curd filled Petit Fours: a Daring Baker’s Challenge and the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck vs Humphrey Slocombe Mashup!

August 27, 2010

Another month goes by, and another Daring Baker’s challenge comes up. Sadly, last month I totally missed out on the daring baker’s challenge because I was busy baking 20 pies for a pie contest. Well, I guess it wasn’t that sad, as I won (whoo hoo!), but I really wanted to make some ice cream which was part of last month’s challenge. AJ and I were given an ice cream maker a few years ago, but we still haven’t busted it out. The baker’s challenge would have been the perfect excuse. But it turns out this months’ baker’s challenge was ALSO ice cream! Joy! The August 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Elissa of 17 and Baking. For the first time, The Daring Bakers partnered with Sugar High Fridays for a co-event and Elissa was the gracious hostess of both. Using the theme of beurre noisette, or browned butter, Elissa chose to challenge Daring Bakers to make a pound cake to be used in either a Baked Alaska or in Ice Cream Petit Fours. The sources for Elissa’s challenge were Gourmet magazine and David Lebovitz’s “The Perfect Scoop”

Chocolate Pavlovas with Chocolate Mascarpone Mousse and Fresh Berries – June’s Daring Baker’s Challenge & Gay Pride Catchup

June 29, 2010

Oh man. Has a month gone by already? After making last month’s croquembouche, I was all prepared to whip this one up way ahead of schedule and then write the post for the end of the month. And this month’s Daring Baker’s Challenge looks awesome as well. But life got in the way (as it always does), and the mad dash to the finish line was pretty much in order (which clearly didn’t even work, as I am a day late). The June 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Dawn of Doable and Delicious. Dawn challenged the Daring Bakers’ to make Chocolate Pavlovas and Chocolate Mascarpone Mousse. The challenge recipe is based on a recipe from the book Chocolate Epiphanyby Francois Payard.

Croquembouche! My Piece Monteé, a Daring Baker’s Challenge

May 27, 2010

If you’ve been reading my blog at all, you’ll remember that last month that I had posted a little blog entry about my first Daring Baker’s Challenge. I had joined them out of fear that I would run out of things to blog about (definitely not an issue) but instead have found wonderful community of supportive bakers! Well, the May 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Cat of Little Miss Cupcake who challenged everyone to make a piece montée, or croquembouche, based on recipes from Peter Kump’s Baking School in Manhattan and Nick Malgieri.

Rhubarb Berry Steamed Pudding – the Daring Baker’s Challenge, April 2010

April 28, 2010

In a fit of anxiety that I wouldn’t have anything to blog about (apparently that’s not an issue as I seem to have a backlog of posts that I’m trying to catch up on) I joined the Daring Kitchen group Daring Baker’s Challenge. For those not in the know, they challenge everyone in the group to bake the same thing and then post simultaneously the results of the baking on the 27th of the month. The April 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Esther of The Lilac Kitchen. She challenged everyone to make a traditional British pudding using, if possible, a very traditional British ingredient: suet.
